Jeni’s Story

IN LOVING MEMORY

Jeni

July 14, 1982 · July 12, 2014

The woman who inspired a castle.
The mother Robbie carries in his heart.

Some loves are so large
they require stone to hold them

Jeni was born on July 14, 1982, and she lived with a warmth that made every room brighter. She was the kind of woman who showed up fully — in love, in life, and in the work she and Mike built together. She believed in Mike’s vision from the very beginning, long before there were walls to prove it.

As a true partner in every sense, Jeni was deeply woven into the business Mike ran. She kept things in order, managed what needed managing, and had a way of keeping Mike focused and on track when the weight of everything could have pulled him sideways. She understood his ambitions the way few people could — and she championed them without hesitation. Behind every dream Mike held, Jeni was there, holding the thread.

On July 12, 2014 — just three days after giving birth to her son Robbie — Jeni passed away. She was 32 years old.

In her final days, Jeni was given something precious: skin-to-skin time with Robbie. She held him close, and he nursed — a sacred, primal connection passed between mother and child in those final hours together. He felt her heartbeat, her warmth, the full presence of the mother he would carry with him for the rest of his life. Those moments are among the most profound gifts she could have left him. That bond, however brief, is a part of him she left behind on purpose.

She was beloved — by the man who would spend the next decade building a castle in her name, and by the son who would grow up inside its walls, learning what love looks like when it refuses to shrink.

What made Jeni’s passing even more extraordinary — and, in hindsight, even more mysterious — is what she had quietly done beforehand. With no indication she would leave so soon, no warning, no reason to prepare for anything, Jeni had laid everything out for Mike: documents, files, legal information, work plans, all the practical things a person would need to carry on without her. She organized what needed organizing and put it where he could find it. There was nothing pointing toward the end. And yet — somehow — she knew. She made sure he wouldn’t face what was coming without every bit of guidance she could possibly leave him.

Jeni never got to watch Robbie grow. But everything he has grown up inside — every stone, every carved wall, every sunset from the rooftop — is her arms around him still.

She deserved a kingdom.
So I built her one.

— MIKE, BUILDER & KEEPER OF DIAMOND MONARX CASTLE

The castle didn’t begin as a plan. It began as a vision.

Not long after Jeni passed, she came to Mike in a dream. She showed him the castle — the stone, the height, the pool shimmering below. A clear, complete picture delivered in the space between sleeping and waking. He woke knowing exactly what he was supposed to build. It wasn’t something he decided. It was something she gave him.

When Jeni passed, Mike was left with an infant son and a grief that could have consumed him. Instead, it became a blueprint. He would build something permanent. Something Robbie could grow up in. Something that said: she was here, and she mattered.

Mike received limited help from family and close friends along the way, and he is grateful for every hand that steadied him in those early days. But when funds ran low — and there were times they ran very low — Mike made a decision that speaks to exactly the kind of man he is: he used every last penny to keep building. Not a single dollar was turned away from the dream. The castle would be finished. Period.

All of this while carrying injuries that would have stopped most people cold. Mike has lived with a serious neck injury for over two decades — a burden carried long before Jeni passed, long before any of this began. Then, just months after losing Jeni, a separate work accident very nearly severed his left hand completely. He almost lost it entirely. The hand survived, but it has never fully functioned the same way since. Mike built a three-story castle — by hand — through all of it. Because quitting was never a real option.

She never really left

Mike has a name for it: the Jeni Factor.

It is the materials that arrive in exactly the right quantity at exactly the right moment. The decision that felt impossible until something shifted and the answer became clear. The person who shows up — the right trade, the right word, the right hand — at a moment of real need, as if directed there. It has happened too many times to count, and too precisely to dismiss.

Jeni never stopped guiding, supporting, and connecting. She works quietly behind the project that bears her name, making sure what she started in that dream made it all the way into stone. The castle that stands today is not only the result of one man’s hands. It is the result of one woman continuing to move through the world in the only way she still could.

She always finds a way.

Year by year, with his own hands and a growing boy at his side, Mike erected a modern castle on the Nebraska plains. Three stories of stone. Battlements and turrets against the prairie sky. Multi-level wraparound terraces overlooking rolling green fields. A rooftop mosaic courtyard with a hand-laid geometric diamond pattern — and one quietly brilliant detail: visible from above, it sends a message to every plane passing overhead. Thousands of travelers in the sky, without ever looking for it, find themselves looking down at something extraordinary on the Nebraska plains. Perhaps the most elegant piece of silent advertising ever laid in stone. A rooftop area with jaw-dropping views stretching all the way to the state capital — and at night, a star-filled sky that has to be seen to be believed.

Below, a 40,000-gallon swim pond carved into the landscape, lit each evening like something from a dream — the very pool Jeni first showed Mike from the other side of sleep. An outdoor patio with a mesmerizing vortex water and fire feature. A landscape alive with pollinators, plants, and wildlife. And just across the road, Conestoga Lake — a sweet fishing spot steps from the front door.

And through all of it: Robbie.

He grew up
inside the tribute

Robbie wore a hard hat before he could walk. He has been on the job site his entire life — not as a bystander, but as a genuine contributor. He is, without a doubt, his father’s left-hand man. (Pun very much intended.)

Working alongside Mike through every phase of the build, Robbie has developed real, hands-on skills that most kids his age simply don’t have. He knows how things go together. He knows what it takes. And he learned it not in a classroom, but in the field — beside the man who was simultaneously building him a home and building him a foundation for life.

Robbie was born into grief and beauty at the same time. He has grown up in a castle built in his mother’s name — learning what it means to honor someone, to build something lasting, to carry someone you never got enough time with. He held her, briefly, when she held him. And she is with him in every stone.

He is Jeni’s continuation. And one day, this place will be his.

When you visit Diamond Monarx Castle,
you are a guest in Jeni’s home

Every event held within these walls is, in its own way, a continuation of her story. Every celebration, every gathering, every quiet moment on the rooftop at golden hour — she is present in all of it. Built into every stone. Carried forward by a son who never stopped growing toward the mother he never got enough time with.

The castle is alive. Mike is alive — still building, still dreaming, still open to wherever this extraordinary place leads next. There is more story to be written here. More people to welcome. More magic to unfold. Whatever comes, Jeni’s presence is woven into all of it. She made sure of that a long time ago.

Diamond Monarx Castle was built by one man’s love, sustained by one man’s sacrifice, and raised by the small but mighty hands of a boy who will always be his father’s greatest partner on the job. Come see what love looks like when it refuses to quit.
